With my background in multi-discipline engineering consultancies, I am an experienced Building Services Engineer providing independent consultancy to clients, design teams and contractors across New Zealand. I have over 25 years of experience in the engineering consultancy and property and construction market.
My experience is most suited to the early stages of a project or for specific problem solving or technical review as a project proceeds. I aim to provide quick, cost-effective, independent advice without the overheads typically associated with multi-discipline engineering consultancies.
Prior to commencing my current consultancy role in late 2023, I held various roles with WSP in Christchurch between 2014 and 2023. These included several years as Building Services Manager, Design Manager and Project Director for a wide variety of design and construction projects for Government and private clients. I was based in Wellington between 2004 and 2014 and was the Mechanical Team Leader and a mechanical Building Services Engineer at Norman Disney and Young.
I offer the following types of independent review and consultancy services:
Early feasibility, concept and preliminary design advice
Client scoping, briefing and feasibility discussions
Due Diligence
Performance specifications written to describe client requirements
Establishing design criteria based on project specific brief and budget requirements
Procurement advice for Building Services sub-contractors and main contractors
Reviewing design drawings and specifications from other parties for technical compliance, maintenance and asset management requirements
Co-ordination reviews across multiple design disciplines
Contract and compliance reviews
Technical reviews of specified equipment and designs
The following provides examples of the consultancy work I have completed at different stages of the project lifecycle from initial concept through to practical completion and beyond.
Meet with clients early to understand their requirements and develop building services related concepts and requirements.
High level concepts that would translate client requirements in to technical jargon or documentation for issuing to market (for procuring design consultants and/ or contractors if design and build).
Write or review technical requirements that are included within RFP documents to make them specific and relevant to the project being considered (as opposed to a set of generic documents that may not be relevant). This should help focus the responses from the market that are (more) relevant to each project.
Provide performance requirements for Building Services and related design disciplines- translate client and project requirements in to technical requirements that consultants or contractors can understand and price
Prior to, or during, Design team appointment or contract negotiations
Review RFP responses from prospective consultants for compliance with technical requirements
Review and comment on any exclusions and assist with assessing any potential scope gaps
Review of technical reports, drawings, specifications on behalf of the client (from a clients perspective) as their technical eyes and ears. This could be particularly relevant where multiple options are presented during design and the designers/ project team are seeking guidance or "sign-off" on which options to proceed with
Has the design (documents produced) provided solutions that are appropriate and suitable for the client and what they asked for and need.
Technical review focusing on co-ordination across disciplines and identifying potential risks and scope gaps as early as possible (prior to construction phase). Early identification and resolution should make procurement and construction more robust.
Review documentation for compliance
Provide commentary and advice on any exclusions or alternatives offered (specific focus on Building Services related disciplines)
Assist with technical reviews or queries
Provide independent review of any technical debates or discussions between engineers and contractors
Commissioning advice
Quality Assurance and design compliance checks
Provide advice and guidance for maintaining and operating buildings- often the ongoing operation after the "defect liability" period isn't fully understood or well managed.
Assist asset owners with understanding what needs to be done to keep their buildings running.
With a focus on collaboration from the early design stages, I led a multi-discipline team as Project Director from concept through to Practical Completion. During the early stages of design I managed the design team working directly for the end client, through to the subsequent Detailed Design and Construction phases nominated to the main contractor. The team focused on the buildability, ease of maintenance and operation of the technically complex building.
The team designed the Building Services (Mechanical, Electrical, Hydraulics) Fire Engineering, Fire Protection, Digital Infrastructure (ICT, Broadcast, Audio Visual, Integrated Building Management System), Acoustic Consultancy, Specialist Lighting, Theatre Consultancy, Greenstar, Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) including Life Cycle Cost Analysis, Seismic Restraint and Non-structural elements design and Structural Fire Engineering Analysis
